Curriculum Years 1 to 6

Key Stage One and Two (Years One to Six)

The school follows the National Curriculum for children in Key Stage One (Years One and Two) and Key Stage Two (Years Three to Year Six) in providing coverage of the following subjects.  Full details are found in the National Curriculum and in school policies which may be borrowed on request from the School Office.

Copies of the curriculum for each year group are included in the Year Group sections on our website.

  • English

The English curriculum covers speaking and listening, reading, writing, handwriting and spelling.  It enables children to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others effectively.  Reading and writing skills are developed to ensure that children are confident in a variety of situations.

The school follows the National Literacy Strategy in implementing the English curriculum.

The school uses Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised as its SSP (Systematic Synthetic Phonics) programme.  Children in Reception and Year One, as well as those children in other years who still need phonics to develop their reading skills,  take home an appropriately matched decodable book each week.  These books have been read in class during the week so your child will be able to read them to you!

As a school we want all our children to develop a lifelong love of reading. Reading is the most important subject as without good reading skills it is difficult for children to access other subjects. For that reason, reading is at the centre of the curriculum at New End. To help instill in children this love and passion for reading,  this year every class has a “Reading Map” which is a selection of brand new quality texts appropriate to their age.  Children from Years One to Six were able to each choose a book from a quality selection provided by The Muswell Hill Children’s Bookshop to add to their classes unique map.  Younger children are able to take home these books for their parents and carers to read to them as part of their journey as a reader.  Older and secure readers are able to read these books themselves.  Children across the school also have the opportunity to visit the parent run Book Hut regularly to select additional books to read at home.

New End also have Reading Ambassadors to support reading across the school.  There are 2 ambassadors from each class, who meet with  the school’s Leader of Literacy once a month to discuss reading. They have provided feedback on everything from the quality of book areas and stock in classes to the use of the reading hut and the new class reading maps.

If parents and carers want to further support their child’s reading development and passion, suggested booklists for further books to promote a love of reading are on the individual page for each year group.

Computing and digital literacy coverage extends to all other curriculum areas which use ICT tools to support learning and development in the subject.

Each week there is a focus for religious education across the school.  This includes focusing on issues, morals and values such as co-operation, respect, responsibility, friendship and honesty.  Children will also experience many different cultural festivals at New End including Christmas, Easter, Harvest, Eid, Diwali, Chinese New Year and Carnival.

Citizenship is a key area of our PSHE curriculum and focuses on developing knowledge, skills and understanding to become informed, active and responsible citizens.  This includes recognising choices, contributing to the life of the class and school through such things as circle time and school council, understanding the need for rules, recognising the role of democracy and recognising that there are different kinds of responsibilities, rights and duties at home, at school and in the community.

Sex and relationship education forms part of the PSHE curriculum.  During Key Stage Two we provide an opportunity to discuss changing feelings, how to protect themselves with appropriate care, lifestyles and safety guidelines and how to form relationships.  Parents and carers are informed prior to any sex and relationship education lessons which deal with these issues.  Parents and carers do have the right to withdraw their children from this aspect of sex and relationship education.  If parents and carers wish to withdraw their children, they are asked to meet with the Headteacher to arrange this.

Drug education is also part of the PSHE Curriculum.  The drug education policy is written by the governing body and reviewed each year.  It includes health and safety relating to medicines, what makes a healthy lifestyle, how to handle peer pressure and the effects of drug use and misuse.
